This may or may not come as a surprise to you, but most dryer sheets are incredibly TOXIC! Here is a quick rundown on some of the JUNK you can expect to find in your typical dryer sheets and some of the health problems they have been linked to:
1. Alpha Terpineol: Can cause headaches, respiratory problems, and central nervous system damage!
2. Benzyl Acetate: Has been linked to pancreatic cancer!
3. Benyl Alcohol: Accumulates in the body and can cause symptoms ranging from respiratory tract irritation to a depressed nervous system!
4. Biodegradable Cationic: Eliminates static and helps make clothes soft and fluffy, but builds up in the body and over time can damage the nervous system!
5. Camphor: Can cause central nervous system disorders, confusion and is easily absorbed through the skin!
6. Chloroform: A known carcinogenic neurotoxin!
7. Dichlorobenzene: A carcinogenic solvent used to make paint thinners!
8. Ethanol: On the EPA’s hazardous waste list and linked to central nervous system disorders!
9. Ethyl Acetate: A narcotic on the EPA’s hazardous waste list!
10. Pentane: Extremely harmful when inhaled and can cause headaches, nausea, respiratory issues, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of consciousness and central nervous system damage!
This list doesn’t even include “fragrance” which are often proprietary blends consisting of many harmful chemicals all disguised under the nice sounding name “fragrance”. According to the EWG (Environmental Working Group) 72% of the products on the market that contain “fragrance”, contain phthlates – which are known to disrupt the endocrine/hormonal system. Phthlates are classified as “xenoestrogens”, meaning they mimic estrogen in the human body which can throw off the balance of estrogen to progesterone, and lower testosterone and fertility. Phthlates have also been linked to obesity, diabetes, liver cancer, breast cancer.
To rid your body and home of “fragrance”, look into your personal care products like soap, shampoo, lotions – as well as scented candles, potpourri, air fresheners, perfume, fragrance sprays, and of course dryer sheets! Toss all of these chemical laden products and go for natural versions instead. If you are a Young Living member this will be incredibly easy for you as all of their personal care and cleaning products are natural, toxin free and fortified with essential oils.
Look into purchasing some dryer balls to replace those toxic dryer sheets! You can place a few drops of your favorite essential oil on each ball to help reduce static and soften your clothes! This will of course make your clothes smell great too! We use these dryer balls:
Additionally, you can also spray your dryer balls with white vinegar to increase the softness of your clothing.
