Where is the dirtiest place on the human body? The mouth!!!
Yes the mouth! Not the colon, not the nose, not the hands…the mouth! Between the teeth, under the tongue, and the back of the tongue is loaded with more pathogenic microorganisms than you can count! The amount of bacteria that can be found in the mouth is really beyond imagination – think of it as cities of creatures living and thriving between your teeth and on your tongue! According to Dr. John Richter, “more bacteria per square inch live on the back of the tongue than any other part of the body.”
The health of the mouth is correlated to the overall health of the body. By improving your oral health you can improve your overall health!
Everyone has heard of the gum disease gingivitis which is linked to bleeding gums, sensitive gums and gum recession. However, what many do not realize is that this pathogen – and poor oral health in general is also linked to heart disease! Porphyromonas Gingivalis (gingivitis), the same pathogen that causes gum disease also contributes to inflammation along the arteries which is linked to heart and vascular disease!
“There is sufficient evidence to conclude that oral lesions, especially advanced periodontopathies, place certain patients at risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke,” stated Louis F. Rose., DDS, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania.
Streptococcus sanguis – another type of bacteria found in periodontal disease has been shown to spread to the heart, and is also linked to strokes! It has been stated that “in the absence of gum disease, there is significantly less of these bacteria in the heart.”
Further illustrating the importance of oral health with regards to cardiovascular and overall health is the fact that gum disease has a strong link to Erectile Dysfunction in men! This is likely due to the fact that gum disease will result in chronic inflammation which can damage endothelial cells. These cells form a barrier that line the inside of blood vessels, and thus are everywhere where there is a lot of blood (such as the heart and reproductive organs). Put simply, more chronic inflammation occurring in the body means more damage to your blood vessels!
Poor oral health also has shown a strong link to cancer! The British Medical Journal followed 1390 Swedish patients over the course of 25 years. “Those with the most dental plaque (bacteria) were twice as likely to die from cancer as those who had low to normal levels.”
Gum disease develops when bacteria in the mouth forms plaque. Plaque is a “community” of bacteria called a “biofilm”. The definition of a biofilm is “a thin, slimy film of bacteria that adheres to a surface”. Typical brushing and flossing can rid the mouth of some plaque, but if the plaque is left unchecked for too long it will harden into tartar. Tartar is hard, yellowish/brownish in color and is loaded with bacteria that can further damage tooth enamel, lead to tooth decay and gum disease. It must be removed with special tools in a dental office.
The problem with most oral care products on the market is that they contain toxic chemicals and use abrasive compounds to scrub the teeth. These abrasive compounds can damage tooth enamel – then they add fluoride to harden the tooth enamel (more on this soon). The majority of toothpastes really don’t do much to rid the mouth of all this bacteria, at least not without the aid of toxic compounds such as stannous fluoride, triclosan and SLS (which have mixed reviews on their effectiveness anyway).
Proper oral health care goes much further than just scrubbing away at those pearly whites and trying to keep your breath fresh. While typical brushing and flossing will remove some plaque and pathogens, it’s still going to leave countless pathogens behind which will re-populate the mouth in no time!

Luckily, it’s very easy to take your oral health care routine to the next level using powerful concoctions of natural antiseptics. Agents such as: Oregano, Thyme, Peppermint, Ocotea, Myrrh, Tea Tree, Clove, Cinnamon, and Rosemary are all like Kryptonite to these little critters in your mouth!
A popular blend consisting of Clove, Cinnamon, Lemon, Rosemary and Eucalyptus has been shown in University studies to have to strong microbial properties against a wide range of oral microbes including: Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Candida albicans, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and many other pathogens that are next to impossible to pronounce! 😉
By ridding your mouth of these nasty colonies of pathogens (bacteria, etc) twice daily, you are potentially taking a massive weight off of your immune system, and supporting your cardiovascualar and overall health!
