You have probably heard the claim that B vitamins are good for energy, but why is this?
B vitamins help the body convert food into glucose, which is the body’s preferred source of energy. B vitamins also help with the metabolizing of protein and fats. Certain B vitamins also help the body create certain hormones and chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Hormones and neurotransmitters play a huge role in our energy levels, mood, and overall mental outlook.
What about stress?
In times of excess stress, making sure you’re getting plenty of B vitamins is a wise choice as cortisol, the chief stress hormone depletes the body of B vitamins. When stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline are chronically elevated, the bodies production of other, more protective hormones will be diminished.
Due to the fact that stress depletes the body of B vitamins, these vitamins have earned the nickname of "the stress vitamins".
It is also important to note that certain B vitamins, specifically B5 has been shown to prevent the secretion of excess cortisol.
B vitamins also support:
-DNA synthesis
-the immune system
-nerve health (and nerve regeneration)
-heart health by lowering LDL cholesterol (B3)
-the brain
-the digestive system
-the formation of red blood cells and more
The wide ranging benefits of B vitamins should not come as a surprise as any nutritional deficiency will register as a stress on the body, negatively effecting any number of bodily systems. Everything in the body is connected. When one bodily system or organ suffers, others are sure to follow.
Supplementing with B vitamins is generally regarded as very safe, as B vitamins are water soluble. With water soluble vitamins the body takes what it needs and passes the rest. More caution needs to be exercised when supplementing with fat soluble vitamins (especially A and D) as any excess will be stored in the bodies fat tissues - and if this excess goes on long enough complications can occur.
Be aware that many of the vitamin B supplements on the market are synthetic. Synthetic means low absorption rates and also raises the obvious question - is it really a good idea to supplement with and load up on synthetic compounds?
Expanding upon this is the fact the the form of B12 used in many vitamin B supplements on the market is in the form of cyanocobalamin. Cyanocobalamin is synthetic, is not found in nature and ingesting this form of B12 will leave traces of cyanide in your body! Yes you read that right, cyanide! The companies who use this form of B12 say that the amount of cyanide left in your body will be small and thus not problematic or toxic...
We recommend avoiding this scenario altogether by making sure the form of B12 you are ingesting is in the form of methylcobalamin. Methylcobalamin is a natural form of B12 found in many foods (fish, meat, eggs and milk) and you don't have to worry about being left with traces of cyanide in your body. Win win!
Many vitamin B supplements on the market focus on only one, or a few of the many B vitamins. B3, B6, and B12 are common here. Intuition and personal experience tells us that the B vitamins work best when they are ALL present, working together in unison, just like they are found in nature from foods like: quality meats, liver, eggs, potatoes, legumes, and leafy greens.
Enter Super B - which is a vitamin B dietary supplement that delivers all eight of the B vitamins: B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, B7 (biotin), B9 (folate) and B12 in the form of methylcobalamin.
Super B also contains the minerals of calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese and selenium – which aid in the assimilation and metabolism of the B vitamins, and are also nutrients that many of us today are deficient in. A proprietary blend of PABA (para amino benzoic acid) and Nutmeg oil has also been added in to help support natural folate production and support a healthy response to stress. Nutmeg oil is very supportive to our adrenal glands.
Many high dose Vitamin B supplements can cause fermentation in the stomach resulting in stomach upset. Super B uses a special formulation process to isolate the various vitamins so that they are released at different times to help avoid stomach upset.
Within a short period of time of beginning supplementation of it, we noticed significant improvements with regards to mood, and our ability to handle stress. We did also noticed the improvements in energy you often hear of when taking B vitamins, but for us the increased overall sense of calmness and reduced anxiety were most profound. Making it one of our all time favorite supplements!
